Records Galore: Slocombe and Kiratli Fire for Rovers on Day 1

10850053_10152630443417545_4586644186290120389_nIn what was the debut of Club President Kevin George for his first time announced on the team sheet, it was definitely a day to remember.

The day didn’t start out so smoothly with the Rovers being sent into bat on an overcast day more suited for fielding. Opening batsmen Yavuz Kiratli and Brandon Reid led the charge to the center.

Brandon Reid went out to face the first ball of the day only to be bowled out for a Golden duck, and the Rovers fell behind early.

In come captain Stuart Slocombe, personally chasing a 1000 run season he set the scene early knocking around boundaries at will.

The rest of the boys watching were hoping for a good score as they knew such a small outfield would need a big target to defend.

Slocombe helped the score of runs early smashing his way well past 50 with Kiratli constantly turning over the strike to the big hitter to bring the Rovers to 1/96 after 20 overs and the first break.

A rejuvenated pair went out and continued the scoring, although the rate slowed down for the next 10 overs, Slocombe and Kiratli then opened up the shoulders and let lose on the spinners from Prestons to have Slocombe hit his century and shortly after Kiratli lifted the run rate and reached his first 50 for Rovers!

An impressive batting display had the Rovers at 1/200 by lunch and the Rovers were in full control, the Prestons fielders were tired, frustrated and lifeless. Slocombe went to put them to the sword and started firing hitting 150 runs in no time after the break and the captain did not stop on his way to 183 (Sporting Rovers Record).

Yavuz Kiratli then continued the scoring making his way to 72 before falling as well. A Heroic Record breaking 269 run partnership saved the Rovers on Day 1 of the match. Their efforts were well applauded and led the Rovers to a first innings score of 312.

“He hit 183 today for our club Sporting Rovers against Prestons which has put us in a very commanding position against Prestons Maroon.. Sporting Rovers all out 312, Prestons in reply 0/29.. Day 1 stumps.” Sporting Rover Cricket President John Fazio commenting.

“What a display, i mean i love cricket, but watching 2 guys that i know command the game that well and build such a partnership out in the middle, you could not help enjoying every moment and watch them dominate over our opponent. Two great guys, one great contribution and I cant wait til next week” Said Club President Kevin George.

With the Rovers in a commanding lead they should take first innings points at least, stay tuned for Day two results being played this Saturday 20th December at Springfield Park, Old Guldford.
